The case

A 44-year-old male presents at the hospital with an anterior STEMI. He has the following characteristics:

  • Current smoker
  • History of claudication (untreated)
  • His father died of a myocardial infarction at the age of 49
  • Several family members with coronary disease before the age of 55
  • Blood pressure: 128/75 mmHg
  • Normal weight
  • No tendon xanthomas or arcus
  • Normal glucose levels
  • LDL cholesterol 240 mg/dl (13.3 mmol/L)
