Biography
Professor Lip, MD, is Price-Evans Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, at the University of Liverpool, UK – and Director of the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. He is also Distinguished Professor at Aalborg University, Denmark. He has a major interest into the epidemiology of atrial fibrillation(AF), as well as the pathophysiology & management of thromboembolism in CVD and stroke. He has been researching stroke and bleeding risk factors, improvements in clinical risk stratification, and care pathways. The CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED scores - for assessing stroke and bleeding risk, respectively – as well as the ABC (Atrial fibrillation Better Care) pathway for holistic AF care - were first proposed and validated following his research, and are now used in guidelines. He is currently Chairperson for the ESC Council on Stroke (2024-26).
