Luc Pierard obtained his MD degree at the age of 23 years, and his PhD in 1986, both in the University of Liège, Belgium.
He was the first to introduce dobutamine stress ehocardiography to identify ischaemia (in 1986) and myocardial viability (in 1990) and also the first to introduce exercise echocardiography in valvular heart disease: ischaemic mitral regurgitation (published in JACC, Circulation, Eur Heart J and N Engl J Med), asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis (Circulation,EHJand primary mitral regurgitation (JACC and Circulation). He is the author of 500 peer-review articles and 50 book chapters.
Luc Pierard was Professor of Medicine and Head of the University Hospital Liège from 2002 to 2017. He is Honorary Professor of Medicine and consultant cardiologist.
He is past chair of the ESC WG in echo and ESC Council in VHD, past president of the BSC.
Professor Pierard was Editor-in-Chief of Acta Cardiologica and is Senior Associate Editor of Eur Heart J Cardiovascular Imaging.
