Axel is heading the Computational Cardiac Modeling group at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The focus of his group is on electrophysiology and biomechanics of the human heart. The group is committed to both method development and the application of computational models in combination with machine learning to answer questions of clinical relevance. His research happens at the interface of engineering, computer science, medicine, and the natural sciences.
Axel obtained a PhD (with distinction) in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology with a focus on Biomedical Engineering from KIT in 2016. His work was recognized with several prestigious awards, among them the Rosanna Degani Young Investigator Award of the Computing in Cardiology Conference, the Gips-Schüle-Nachwuchspreis, the KIT Doctoral Award, and the Patient Safety Award of the the German Biomedical Engineering Society (DGBMT).
