He returned to Spain in 1999 to establish his research group at the Institute of Biomedicine of Valencia (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC), where he worked as a Full Professor and later on was appointed Head of the Department of Pathology & Molecular & Cellular Therapy (2003-2009). In September 2009, he transferred his research group to Madrid to lead the laboratory of Molecular and Genetic Cardiovascular Pathophysiology in the CNIC, where he is Director of the Department of Basic Research since 2015. By combining animal and human studies, his translational research provides a framework for understanding how genes and environmental factors dicytate aging and cardiovascular disease.
