Professor Ryszard Tomasz Smolenski

Professor Ryszard Tomasz Smoleński is the Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical University of Gdańsk since 2016. He graduated at the Medical Faculty of the Medical University of Gdańsk in 1986, defended PhD in 1990, habilitation in 2000 and was awarded professor title in 2016. He headed the Heart Metabolism Research Group at the Magdi Yacoub Institute, Imperial College London from 1997 to 2009. He worked or did internships at research centers in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and United States. The main focus of his research is the metabolism and functions of nucleotides. This includes studies on changes of nucleotide metabolism and cardiac energetics in pathology, identification new therapeutic targets, the development of new methods for metabolomics based on liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, research using genetic models of atherosclerosis and heart failure, clinical research on mechanisms of disease and therapy and identification of new biomarkers.
