Stefano Barco completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pavia, Italy, and received a PhD in Vascular Medicine from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He leads a research group at the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis of the University Medical Center Mainz, Germany, and is staff physician at the Clinic of Angiology, University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. Barco's research interests are in the acute treatment, epidemiology, and long-term sequelae of venous thromboembolism with a focus on pulmonary embolism, rare thromboembolic disorders, and special patient populations. He is involved as Steering Committee member, or member of Data Safety Monitoring Board of multinational trials in pulmonary embolism. Dr. Barco is associate editor for Thrombosis Research and for Haemostaseologie-Progress in Haemostasis, and serves as a referee for several top journals in the field. He has published over 170 research studies, articles, and editorials on VTE.
