Biography
Jan-Peter Smedema was born on May 1st 1964 in Sneek, The Netherlands. He studied Medicine at the Free University in Amsterdam, worked in respiratory medicine and cardio-thoracic surgery, before joining the Amsterdam Department of Interventional Cardiology (OLVG). The doors of opportunity and clinical exposure beckoned in South Africa. He worked in the Cardiac Units at the Ga-Rankuwa and Baragwanath Hospitals. He trained as a Specialist Physician in Cape Town (SU), and studied Stroke Medicine through the ESO/Dabube University, Austria. He recently obtained his PhD (CMR in cardiac sarcoidosis, Maastricht University), and currently studies Sports Medicine/Cardiology (SSISA, UCT, Cape Town). His clinical work consist of interventional cardiology at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital.
