Professor Antonio Carlos de Carvalho

I am a physiologist, with special interest in cardiovascular science. For the last 17 years I have been focusing my research interest on stem cells and cell therapies for cardiac diseases. In this field I have been conducting basic, translational and clinical research. In Brazil, I Coordinate the Brazilian Cell Therapy Network, an initiative of the Ministry of Health to speed translational research in this important area of the health sciences. I also coordinated nationally a multicenter study designed to test the efficacy of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell therapies in cardiopathies. Pre-clinical work developed by our group laid the groundwork for using bone marrow-derived cell therapies in Chagasic cardiomyopathy, but we have explored other sources of adult stem cells in different cardiopathies, ranging from ischemic to dilated cardiomyopathies. I have published close to 200 peer-reviewed articles and more recently my group is using iPSC to model cardiac diseases.
