Mr Ioannis Valasakis

Ioannis Valasakis is a Research Software Engineer in Prof. Peter Macfarlane’s Electrocardiology Group at the University of Glasgow. Since 2025 he develops the deep learning evolution of the Glasgow ECG Automated Interpretation Algorithm (uni-g), the clinical engine running in hospital ECG hardware around the world. His research brings deep learning to atrial fibrillation detection from 12-lead ECGs, builds pre-diagnostic signal-quality safeguards, and carries decades of clinical C code into modern PyTorch pipelines. He holds a PhD in Computational Neuroscience from King’s College London (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience), where he developed machine learning methods for biomedical imaging. His expertise is on biomedical signal processing, deep learning, reproducible ML engineering, MRI, and explainable AI for biomarker discovery and clinical decision support. Outside the lab, he writes and performs music, and speaks Greek, English, and some German.
