
Doctor Richard Monaghan

Biography
Dr. Richard Monaghan is a Research Fellow at the BHF Centre for Research Excellence Manchester, within the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manchester. Since February 2016, he has been investigating genetic mechanisms of congenital heart disease in Professor Bernard Keavney's group. Dr. Monaghan received his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Manchester in 2011 and was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in August 2024.
His research focuses on interorganelle communication and genetic mechanisms of cardiovascular disorders, including the development of the novel SLiCOPs technology. Dr. Monaghan has published in high-impact journals such as Nature Cell Biology and Cardiovascular Research, and has contributed to securing over £1.5M in external funding.
Outside his research, Dr. Monaghan is an accomplished pianist who enjoys composing music and painting, finding creative balance to his scientific endeavours.
