Biography
Dr Marta Futema is a cardiovascular genetics researcher and lecturer at City St George’s, University of London. She specialises in the genetic basis of lipid disorders, particularly familial hypercholesterolaemia and lipoprotein(a), using large-scale genomic datasets such as UK Biobank and the 100,000 Genomes Project. She began her research career at University College London (UCL), where she developed expertise in lipid genetics and inherited cardiovascular conditions. Since joining City St George’s, she has led research on rare and polygenic contributors to cardiovascular risk, combining statistical genetics with functional approaches. She teaches on the MSc Genomic Medicine programme and leads the Genomics of Cardiovascular Disease module, while supervising postgraduate students. Her work aims to improve precision diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular disease through omics. A native Polish speaker, she also enjoys travelling and practising yoga.
