Biography
Erik Timmermans is Assistant Professor and Epidemiologist at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, UMC Utrecht, and nucleus member of the Population Science and Public Health section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology. His research focuses on lifestyle and environmental risk factors for chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease.
He studied Human Movement Sciences (cum laude) at the University of Groningen and obtained his PhD in Epidemiology of Ageing at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is involved in various (inter)national consortia on the exposome, urban health, and healthy ageing, and leads projects within EXPOSOME-NL (NWO Gravitation Grant), SURREAL (Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN), and the Heart-Brain Connection consortium (Dutch Cardiovascular Alliance). Since 2011, he has been teaching and supervising students in various BSc-/MSc-curricula. In 2025, he received the Senior Scientist Dekker Fellowship from the Dutch Heart Foundation.
