Biography
Dr Kardassis is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Crete Medical School and group leader at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology of Hellas in Heraklion, Greece. Dr Kardassis has been working in the field of lipoprotein regulation and function since 1986. His studies have focused on the characterization of the regulatory elements and factors that control the expression of several apolipoprotein genes. He played a major role in the elucidation of the role of hormone nuclear receptors in apolipoprotein gene regulation. In recent years, the focus of his research is on the genetic basis and the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis using animal models of dyslipidemias combined with omics technologies. He is also studying the molecular pathologies in fatty liver disease.
