Associate professor Erika Jones is a nephrologist and Hypertension Specialist at Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town. She is the director of the Hypertension Service the Kidney and Hypertension Research Unit.
Professor Jones has an interest in the genetic risk for hypertension having completed her PhD on a sodium channel variant that increases the risk for hypertension and responds well to sodium channel blockade. She has published over 50 papers in the fields of hypertension and nephrology. She is a proponent for lowering sodium intake and public awareness of hypertension. Her clinical interests include all aspects of clinical hypertension and the long term renal and cardiovascular complications of hypertension during pregnancy. She aims to improve cardiovascular health, especially in low resourced settings. She was the PI for the Cape Town site for the CREOLE trial, which has influenced hypertension care in Africa and has been an investigator on many clinical trials.
