OR16. Circulating Interleukin-6 correlates with Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction in ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Abstract
ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a life-threatening condition caused by sudden blockage of infarct-related artery and is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is known to have a role in the development of atherosclerotic plaque that occurs in STEMI. This inflammatory response was associated with Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) disruption which can directly increase morbidity and mortality of STEMI. This study aims to determine the relationship between IL-6 with LVEF in STEMI patients.
This is a cross-sectional study conducted with a total of 20 STEMI patients. IL-6 was measured at hospital admission and LVEF was assessed within 6 months post Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI). Quantitative data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (SD) or median [interquartile range (IQR)] or number (%) and qualitative data were presented as frequencies. Bivariate analysis was performed to determine correlation between IL-6 and LVEF using Spearman’s Correlation test.
Analysis showed this study population had mean age 55.83 ± 10.26 years, was dominated by male (90%) and about 80% had smoking as a cardiovascular risk factor. All of our subjects received medication based on current STEMI guideline. Our study showed a correlation between serum level of IL-6 with LVEF (p-value 0.043, correlation coefficient -0.456).
Our analysis suggests that there is an inverse correlation between admission circulating IL-6 level with LVEF in STEMI patients.
