Learning objectives

After watching this webinar, participants will understand: 

• that a complex network of biological pathways underlies the CVD-MD comorbidity;
• that traditional statistical techniques are insufficient to reconstruct this network from data;
• the difference between association networks and causal networks;
• how to enrich the traditional network analyses in both cases with synergistic associations;
• that these new techniques can lead to newly identified key biomarkers; and that validating the synergistic associations requires large data sets and new ways of performing trials.

Needs assessment and expected educational outcome

To change the way participants perceive traditional statistical analyses of biomedical data sets – including the perception of networks inferred from such data sets – and to challenge the ‘single-cause’ paradigm that pervades biomedical science today.
