Prof Samira Lakhal-Littleton is a translational scientist focused on the role of iron in the cardiovascular system. She is currently Professor of Physiology and MRC Senior Research Fellow at University of Oxford. After completing her DPhil at Oxford in 2007, she joined the laboratory of Prof Sir Peter Ratcliffe, where she discovered intersections between iron and hypoxia signaling. She then secured a BHF Intermediate Research Fellowship, which allowed her to discover the mechanisms and physiological importance of local iron control in the cardiovascular system. She is now focused on translating her discoveries into the clinic. She is member of the Royal Society Research Grants Board and UKRI Interdisciplinary Assessment College, and regularly reviews grants for the BHF, MRC, BBSRC and NIH. Samira has received many awards, most recently the Physiological Society's Bayliss Starling Prize Lecture. In 2019, she was elected to the board of directors of the International BioIron Society.
