Julie De Backer, MD, PhD, FESC is a genetic cardiologist with a clinical and research interest in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and Heritable Thoracic Aortic Diseases (HTAD) at Ghent University Hospital (Belgium). She runs the ACHD clinic and is involved in several interdisciplinary clinics for patients with ACHD/HTAD and in the development of adequate transition programs and is passionate about providing excellent patient care. Her research focuses on deep cardiovascular phenotyping in Marfan syndrome and related HTAD and the relation to the genotype. Using genetically engineered animal models she and her team aim to identify new targets for better treatment and management. She is board member of VASCERN, the ESC WG on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Disease and the Montalcino Aortic Consortium.
