Carolina van Deursen was born on Augustus 17, 1985 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. After completing secondary education at “Van Maerlant Lyceum” in Eindhoven where she obtained her Gymnasium diploma in 2003, she started her medical training at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Maastricht University. As a medical student she became involved in professor Prinzen’s research group at the department of physiology in 2006, presenting her work at major international conferences. She graduated as Medical Doctor in 2010 and continued her research in a PhD-project investigating strategies to improve application of cardiac resynchronization therapy. Moreover, she was involved in training of medical students during this period. In 2013, she received an award for best oral presentation at the annual conference of the Dutch Heart Rhythm Association. From 2014 she is following a specialization tract in cardiology at Maastricht University Medical Center and Zuyderland Medical Center (Heerlen).
