Biography
Bertram Pitt was born on April 27th 1932 in New York . He received a BA degree from Cornell University in 1953 and his MD from the University of Basel in 1959 . He trained in cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and remained there until 1977 when he went to the University of Michigan as professor of medicine and director of the division of cardiology, where he is currently professor emeritus . He has received lifetime achievement awards from ESC HF and HFSA as well as the James B Herrick award from the AHA. He has been principal or co-principal investigator of a number of clinical trials including SOLVD, ELITE 1&2 , RALES,EPHESUS, EMPHASIS- HF, TOPCAT, FIGARO and Block-CKD . He has published over 750 peer reviewed articles. He is married to Elaine Pitt MD, a psychiatrist, and has 3 children one of whom Geoffrey Pitt MD is director of cardiovascular research at Weil Cornell Medical College.
