Charle Viljoen obtained the degree MBChB (with distinction) from the University of Pretoria, with the highest marks in the final year of study. After completing his MMed in Internal Medicine at the University of Cape Town, he continued training in Cardiology at Groote Schuur Hospital. As a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa he is actively involved in medical education, conducting regular bedside tutorials and lecturing Electrocardiography to medical students at the University of Cape Town. Whilst reading for a PhD, he created an online ECG learning platform (ecgonline.uct.ac.za) and a reference app for ECGs (ECG APPtitude, available from the App Store and Google Play). Dr Viljoen has a special interest in heart failure and arrhythmias and is the co-supervisor of several masters and honours research projects. In 2018 he was awarded the International Resident Leadership Award by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
