Biography
Professor Freek Verheugt is Emeritus Professor of Cardiology at the Heart-Lung Centre of the University Medical Centre of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and was Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Prof. Verheugt graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1974 and wrote a thesis on platelet and granulocyte antigens and antibodies. He trained in cardiology at the Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus Medical Centre, University in Rotterdam. He has been a Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO, USA, and at the Free University in Amsterdam. He was President of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology between 1999 and 2001. Prof. Verheugt’s main fields of scientific interest are pharmacological and interventional treatments of acute coronary syndromes and atrial fibrillation. Prof. Verheugt has published over 780 papers in peer-reviewed international journals including The New England Journal of
