Biography
Professor/cardiologist John Munkhaugen (b.1983) is a FESC, National Coordinator of the EAPC and a Nucleus Member of the ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. He served served as an EAPC Young Ambassador from 2021 to 2024. He leads the Norwegian Society of Cardiology Working Group on Preventive cardiology. Munkhaugen established NORCOR, a translational prevention and behavioural cardiology programme, spanning mechanistic studies, registries, randomised trials, and implementation projects. His research has redefined the role of beta-blockers post-MI, advanced plasma-based assays for assessing statin adherence, pioneered the molecular characterisation of statin intolerance, and led randomised trials of behavioural and psychological interventions targeting smoking cessation, anxiety and depression, and insomnia. He is first/last author on multiple publications in the NEJM, Lancet, Eur Heart J, and leading pharmacology journals. He has supervised 24 PhD/postdoctoral fellows.
