Assistant Professor of Medicine in Heidelberg. After gaining his medical degree from the University of Homburg, Prof. Giannitsis completed postgraduate training in internal medicine and cardiology at Lübeck University Hospital, Germany. Subsequently, he undertook a PhD in internal medicine before his current position in 2002.
Prof. Giannitsis’s research interests focus on cardiac biomarkers, i.e. troponins, and their validation in the diagnosis of coronary syndromes, as well as cardiac MR imaging. He has been the Principal National Coordinator in many clinical trials in these fields including the PLATO trial, the ATLAS-TIMI 46 and ATLAS-TIMI 51 trials. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the European Society of Cardiology: He served as a member of the program committee for the ESC from 2010-2012, and he is a founder of the Chest Pain Unit initiative of the German Society of Cardiology and currently the Chair of the certification committee for Chest Pain Units.
