John A Cairns, Research: myocardial infarct size, and clinical trials of antithrombotic therapies for ACS and AF, and anti-arrhythmic agents post-MI. Cardiology practice focused on acute coronary care and invasive cardiology. He has been active in the formulation of Canadian Cardiovascular Society guidelines for atrial fibrillation from 2010 to the present. He has held a number of academic leadership roles including Chair of Medicine, McMaster University (1988-96) and Dean of Medicine, University of British Columbia (1996-2003). He led the CIHR Clinical Research Initiative (2004-05), for Canadian clinical research infrastructure and co-chaired CANNeCTIN, a nationally-funded clinical trials network 2008-13. He is a Past-President of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He chairs the steering committee of an Abbott-Population Health Research Institute (McMaster University) collaboration to conduct independent analyses of 3 long term registries of Optim-coated ICD leads.
