Doctor Mercedes Carnethon

Dr. Carnethon is an epidemiologist who studies the burden and impact of chronic diseases, specifically cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and lung disease. Over her 20 year career, she has authored over 350 publications that appear in leading scientific journals in the fields of medicine and public health. Her research findings have been disseminated broadly through major print (e.g., Chicago Tribune, USA Today, New York Times), local and national media. Dr. Carnethon is a leader in postdoctoral and faculty career development. Dr. Carnethon is an active volunteer of the American Heart Association where she serves as the board chairperson for the Chicago chapter, past chair of the Obesity committee for the Council on Lifestyle (2022-23), and Chair of the Council on Epidemiology and Prevention (2023-24). She has served on the Board of Scientific Counselor’s for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute since 2021. In her spare time, she enjoys athletic competition.
